No fewer than 400 cartons of Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) were handed over to the Sokoto State government through the state primary healthcare development agency by the Nigerian Red Cross for distribution to the malnourished children in the state.
The director of community health of the agency, Abubakar Muhammad Kaura, who received the RUTF on behalf of the agency, said the items would be shared accordingly among the affected children in the Wamako, Sokoto North and Sokoto South local government areas.
Kaura explained that the support is aimed at treating children suffering from malnutrition and helping in reducing illnesses linked to a lack of proper food.
Health workers say RUTF is mainly used to serve as a relief and a source of strength for malnourished children because it contains the needed nutrients and can be eaten without cooking.
The Sokoto State Coordinator of the Nigerian Red Cross, Abubakar Chika Aino, said the organisation has provided the items to support efforts to reduce malnutrition in the state.
Aino stated that the organisation is also working on longer-term solutions to hunger.
“As part of this, community vegetable gardens have been established in Tudun Wada, an IDP camp, and Kammata to serve residents of the affected local government areas.”
According to him, “We established these vegetable gardens to help families who cannot afford nutritious food to harvest for their home use.”
He added that the organisation has also introduced a poultry rearing hub in six communities to improve access to protein food.
For some families, these initiatives are already helping their children to regain their strength and giving them hope of better health.
