Kaduna, Nigeria – In a show of solidarity and support, the Northern Consensus Movement (NCM), a coalition of 593 grassroots organizations from the 19 Northern States and FCT, organized a one-million-strong march in Kaduna to endorse the candidacy of former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulazeez Abubakar Yari, for the position of Senate President. The massive gathering took place on Thursday, June 6, 2023.
Highlighting the significant electoral contributions from the northwestern region, where over 5.7 million votes were cast for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the recent elections, the NCM made a compelling case for Yari’s suitability for the position. The group believes that Yari’s proven track record and popularity in the region make him a strong candidate for the Senate Presidency.
During the march, Comrade Awwal Abdullahi Aliyu, the President of NCM, issued a statement emphasizing the democratic principles of inclusivity and representation. The NCM stressed that democracy should transcend religious and tribal affiliations, focusing instead on the people’s collective interests and aspirations. They underlined the fact that the people of the North have chosen President Ahmed Bola Tinubu as their preferred candidate for the presidency, and they request his support in their push for Yari’s candidacy.
In a related development, the Christian Organization of Nigeria (CON), a group comprising pastors and bishops, also expressed their endorsement of Abdulazeez Abubakar Yari for the position of Senate President, further boosting his prospects.
In their statement, the NCM implored President Tinubu, a respected Democrat, to uphold democratic principles and ensure a fair and transparent selection process for the 10th Senate President. They expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s support as a progressive leader and conveyed their highest regards.
The race for the 10th Assembly leadership is intensifying, with various groups throwing their weight behind their preferred candidates. The Northern Consensus Movement’s massive march and the endorsement from the Christian Organization of Nigeria serve as significant developments in Abdulazeez Abubakar Yari’s bid for the Senate Presidency.
