The Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, has written to the Nigerian Senate president, Ahmed Lawan, for a reason why he withheld his assent to the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2021.
This was contained In the letter the president sent to the President of the senate president stating that the current state of the country would prevent him from signing the electoral Amendment Bill .
Although Buhari’s 30-day window to sign the bill expired on Sunday night.
According to the President, he rejected the Electoral Amendment Bill for several reasons, including the high cost of holding direct primaries, the security challenges of monitoring the election, the violation of citizens’ rights, and the marginalization of small political parties.
The President also stated that he had received informed advice from relevant government ministries, departments, and agencies and that he had carefully reviewed the bill in light of the current realities in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
However, for the president, it would be preferable if each political party could choose its method of picking candidates for election.
Both the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, had met with the President about the bill at various times and expressed confidence that he would sign it.
Following the constitution, the National Assembly delivered the bill to President Buhari for assent on November 19.
According to pundits, governors have gotten their way since they favor delegates or indirect primaries to the direct primary that the amendment attempted to force on all political parties in the country.
