With a consequence, enactment of a law, and a punishment request, a coalition of civil society groups call on the Kaduna State Government to end the atrocities of killer phone snatchers, thugs, and criminals threatening the citizens’ lives and properties in the state.
The groups, Conflict Mitigation Management and Regional Council (CMMRC), Community Peace Observers (CPOs), and Forum for Media and Peace Journalism Network, jointly stated on Monday in Kaduna while raising alarm about the deteriorating issues.
In the statement, the coordinator for the Forum for Media and Peace Journalism Network, Ibrahima Yakubu, urged the state government to enact strict and punitive laws that will deter criminals, especially killer phone snatchers and hoodlums, from carrying out their activities.
The government should ensure the safety of citizens by arresting and prosecuting those who cause chaos, violence, or deprive others of their valuable possessions. This will enable citizens to carry out their daily routines without any harassment, intimidation, or fear of attacks.
We understand the responsibility of parents to ensure the good conduct of their children; however, the recent outrageous attacks on citizens of Kaduna by the killer phone snatchers can also be attributed to the rise of unemployment, illiteracy, peer group influence, economic hardship, and poverty, which can be addressed by the state government with efforts to enact the law of service to penalty while also building a mechanism that will address the challenges. The statement says
However, the groups also called for citizens’ participation in restoring law and order in the state by feeding security operatives with necessary information regarding any insecurity threat and exposing suspicious activities and criminal elements.
Such efforts can effectively improve the lives of citizens and grow the economy and every sector of the state.
