As the report of N1.09BN stolen from the Enugu State government official account circulates in Nigeria, with some media organisations and influencers of the social media posting to urge actions from authorities as well as condemn the cases of rising corruption despite hardship in the country, the Nigerian police force has cleared that the news of the N1.09BN theft is false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the police headquarters and signed by its spokesman, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on January 9, 2025, revealed that “Nobody has gained access to or hacked the Enugu state government account; any reports or allegations about N1.09BN theft should be regarded as baseless.
Following the outcry by concerned citizens in the country, the Nigerian Police Cyber Crime Centre launched investigations into the matter and had only examined it. It’s a case of procurement fraud, not a cyber breach as widely spread and reported.
So far, a suspect in connection with the procurement fraud has been arrested while the money had already been recovered, ACP Adejobi noted.
The Enugu State Government and authorities concerned from both ministries, MDAs, and other corporate firms are in a strong partnership with the NCC and have established a comprehensive and fortified security protocol to ensure the security of the financial system.
Therefore, Nigerians are advised to refrain from spreading disinformation by verifying the source of information before disseminating it”. He added.
