Amidst ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s northwest region, which include the rise of banditry, cattle rustling, conflicts between farmers and herders, communal crises, arms and human trafficking, security operatives in the country are intensifying their efforts to combat these threats and create a safe environment for citizens well-being.
In response to these challenges, at the First Quarter of the 2023 Zonal Conference of State Directors of the DSS, security agencies such as the military, police, Department of State Security Services (DSS), and other sister agencies revealed plans to enhance collaboration and synergy to effectively tackle criminals and eradicate their atrocities to establish crime-free zones across the country.
During the event, Kaduna State DSS Director Abdul Ehenche highlighted the significant improvements in the security situation within the northwest zone. He emphasized that the collaborations among various security agencies have played a crucial role in enhancing the security of lives and properties.
Specifically, the efforts have led to a decline in banditry, cattle rustling, conflicts between farmers and herders, communal crises, arms trafficking, and human trafficking within a relatively short period.
Ehenche further recommended that other states in the respective zones establish a similar forum for their governors. This forum would serve as a platform for the governors to address security challenges collectively and seek long-lasting solutions. The importance of such a platform cannot be overstated, as it would facilitate information sharing, coordination of efforts, and the development of effective strategies to tackle security issues in the region.
By establishing this collaborative framework, state governments can harness the expertise and resources of all relevant stakeholders, including security agencies, community leaders, and residents. This inclusive approach ensures a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and enables the formulation of more effective and sustainable solutions.
Also, the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, CP Musa Yusuf Garba, reiterated the importance of intensifying collaborations among security agencies in the fight against insecurity and criminality. He emphasized that security agencies share a common goal, and to effectively address the security challenges in the northwest region, it is essential to enhance cooperation and coordination among them.
CP Musa Yusuf Garba expressed concern about the pervasive nature of insecurity across the seven states in the northwest region of the country. Recognizing the unfortunate situation, he stressed the urgent need to establish mechanisms that would lead to lasting solutions and create an environment free from crime.
The commissioner’s remarks underscore the significance of synergy among security agencies to tackle security issues effectively. By pooling resources, intelligence, and expertise, these agencies can improve their operational efficiency and enhance their ability to counter criminal activities.
However, the Kaduna state governor, represented by the state commissioner for internal security and home affairs, Samuel Aruwan, revealed that bandits have openly tried to crush the rural economy by attacking farmers and locals even in their homes in the state.
According to him, efforts and synergy among the security agencies have yielded positive results, especially in the last eighteen months, as the bandits have suffered the consequences of their atrocities through the intensification of ground and air actions against terrorism, as a significant number of bandits and their camps have been destroyed and neutralized across the state.
These efforts were achieved through close collaborations among security agencies, in which the DSS plays a significant role by providing actionable intelligence. He added
