Lagos, southwestern Nigeria— In the effort to strengthen and secure the country’s treasury and its resources, the Nigerian anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has arrested two foreign nationals and six Nigerians for their alleged engagement in illegal mining at a location in the Ogere area of Ogun State.
Among the suspects who were apprehended on Friday by the operatives were two Chinese nationals named Gao Pei Hai and Zhang Hang Lin, while the Nigerians include Wasiu Ademola Alao, Ajibola Nurudeen, Matthew Mathias, Oluwaseun Amoo, Ibrahim Yinusa, and Saidu Shuaibu.
However, during the operation, some solid minerals believed to be ground lithium loaded in three trucks were recovered in the raid following some intelligence surveillance by the commission.
Besides the mineral resources, a Toyota 4Runner SUV, international passports, samples of suspected low-grade lithium, ATM cards, four LED flashlights, and mobile phones were among the items seized from the suspects by the operatives.
In the statements, the EFCC discloses that the suspects will face the wrath of the law as they will be charged in court once the ongoing investigations are concluded.
