Kaduna, Northwestern Nigeria – The Chairman of Small Claims Court Committee of the Kaduna state, Justice Darius Khobo, has encouraged Judges within the Small Claims Court to have an appreciable understanding of the principles and application of corresponding laws of the court.
He said, due to the nature of the claims before the court, hence the need for the judges to heighten and maintain thorough understanding of the Small Claims Court rules and regulations.
Justice Khobo asserted this in Kaduna yesterday during a one-day stakeholders training session, where he emphasised that judges should be updated on relevant legal developments through continuing education.
While speaking he said, ” the importance of an independent and honourable judiciary is indispensable to justice in our society. A judge should maintain and enforce high standards of conduct and should personally observe those standards, so that the integrity and independence of the judiciary may be preserved.
” The judges of the Small Claims Courts should be mindful of the fact that the process is simplified to ensure speedy justice, and that must not be compromised in any form.”
In their seperate remarks, speakers at the event during their paper presentation, explained that the purpose of the Small Claims Court is to provide an accessible and efficient form to resolve monetary dispute of five million naira and below without the need for complex legal processes.
One of the speakers, His worship, Shamsudeen Jafar, emphasised that the court is cheap and easy to use, adding that adjournment is only granted once and for good reasons.
In his paper presentation titled: ” Overview of Small Claims Court in Kaduna state, It’s Jurisdiction and benefit, His worship, Musa Mohammed Lawal, explained that the Court allows for speedy dispensation of cases within 60 days.
