Sanyinna District Head Moves to Curb Lavish Weddings, Naming Ceremonies in Sokoto

By Salim Ashir

The newly turbanned District Head of Sanyinna in the Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State, Barrister Ibrahim Muhammed, has said he would take necessary steps to discourage unnecessary spending on weddings, namings and other social ceremonies in his domain.

The district head made the pledge while addressing a large number of residents shortly after his turbaning by the Sultan of Sokoto on Thursday.

Muhammed was among the 21 district heads turbaned by the Sultanate council yesterday.

He said the measure was aimed to alleviate the sufferings of the residents, especially due to the rise in socioeconomic hardship in the country.

While assuring his readiness to boost food security in his area, he, however, called on farmers, traders and clerics to support his efforts.

He urged Islamic scholars to frequently sensitise the residents “on the need to adhere to Islamic teachings, particularly during weddings and naming ceremonies”.

He also announced the formation of committees on security, education, electricity and water supply in order to address key needs of the community.

The legal expert, however, expressed his appreciation to the Sokoto State Government and the Sultanate Council for the opportunity to serve and thanked the people of his district for their support.
