Abuja, Nigeria— On Saturday, 11 January 2025, Daily Episode lifted a story from News Direct’s official Facebook account with a caption: “National Grid collapse, first in 2025.” The story circulates, and our audience among victims of the misinformation, which we regret not fact-checking before publishing, follows the credibility of the medium for its years of publishing accurate and reliable news.
Following the confirmation, we regret to announce the retraction of yesterday’s update regarding the 2025 grid collapse, as we assure you of compliance with our fact-checking in the future.
However, an X account with NationalGridNg, known for updates and real-time data on the National Grid in Nigeria, published on the X handle, advising Nigerians to disregard the claim of a National Grid collapse attached with a circular signed by Ndidi Mba, TCN’s public relations officer.
Daily Episode confirmed the story as misleading, following the circular released by the Nigerian transmission company claiming the news was misleading by providing the faulty cable lines in the country.
According to the statement signed by Mba, “Before the tripping, Nigeria had generated about 4,335.63 MW, while after the tripping, 2,573.32 MW, which clarifies that the grid experienced a glitch and not a collapse.
There was no grid collapse as widely spread, but the Egbin, Olorunsogo, Geregu, Paras, and Omotosho line tripping was affected and has been fully restored; only the Benin-Omotosho 33KVA repair is still ongoing”. The statement confirmed.
