Following the Nigerian government’s commitment to ensuring international security, peace, and stability in Africa and the rest of the world, Nigeria’s army is redeploying 197 troops for a peacekeeping mission in the neighbouring West African nation of Gambia.
This comes weeks after the country redeployed no fewer than 172 troops in troubled zones in Guinea-Bissau for similar operations as the giants of Africa.
However, during the pre-deployment training, which aimed at refreshing the knowledge and expertise of the troops, the army chief of operations, Major General Labgaja, commended the troops for their commitment while urging them to distance themselves from misconduct or violations of human rights during the mission.
While Brig. Gen. Sunday Makolo also disclosed that only quality peacekeepers be deployed to contribute to international peace and security in tune with the policy direction of President Muhammadu Buhari.
He further charged the contingents to be worthy ambassadors of the country, noting that the tactical skills imparted to them will put them in good stead to accomplish the tasks in fulfilment of the ECOMIG mandate.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian army has a long history of contributing to peacekeeping efforts in Africa and beyond. Its personnel have served in various missions under the UN and AU, including in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, and Mali.
