Kano, northwestern Nigeria— Following the increase in crime rate across Kano state, the Kano state Hisbah Board has moved to curtail the menace by evacuating street children from their hideout to a yet-to-be-mentioned rehabilitation center.
Daily Episode is yet to confirm whether the evacuation aims to empower the children with education and essential support or to reunite them with their families.
The Hisbah General Commandant, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, announced on his Facebook account on December 31, 2024, that the organisation had successfully evacuated over 200 street children.
According to Daurawa, the children are not exclusively Nigerians; many come from neighbouring countries, while not all the children are indigenes of Kano State.
Daurawa stated, “The street children currently in our custody are about 220, of whom we have identified their countries and states of origin; about 11 of them are not Nigerians but citizens of Niger Republic, while about 8 are from Borno State, 44 from Katsina, 86 from Kano, 16 from Jigawa, 18 from Kaduna, 10 from Zamfara, 6 from Yobe, 4 from Niger, 7 from Bauchi, 2 from Kebbi, 3 from Gombe, and 1 from Nasarawa State.
Most of them slept in open spaces, mostly under bridges and in the markets or motor parks within the Kano metropolitan area, but after a raid by our gallant officers, we were able to evacuate many of them. It was a success, and currently, the children’s condition has significantly improved so far”.
Daily Episode had made efforts to contact the Hisbah public relations officer as to whether the children would be returned back to their parents or would continue their lives under the custody of the Kano State government but all efforts returned in vain.
Our reporter learns that the children have already started taking classes for rehabilitation.
Many Nigerians who commented on the commandant’s Facebook post applaud the Hisbah for the initiative while calling on the Kano state government to support the initiative as such children contribute to insecurity while they grow with education and parental companionship.
