Kano, Northwestern Nigeria— Following the increasing number of missing children in Nigeria, with Kano ranking among the states with high rates of abduction and trafficking of children, a Kano State High Court sitting at Miller Road has sentenced seven individuals to various prison terms for their involvement in the crime.
The convicts were arrested in 2019 for trafficking the abducted children from Kano to Anambra State and were arraigned on charges related to the kidnapping of several minors.
However, the court finds them guilty of the charge of abducting Umar Ibrahim, Amira Auwal, and Usman Muhammad. Aisha Muhammad, Haruna Sagir, and Husna Salisu.
Among those convicted was one Poul, who admitted guilt during the proceedings. Due to his confession and the gravity of the charges, he was handed a prison sentence totalling 104 years, while other convicts like Emmanuel Egwe received 9 years without the option of a fine, Ebere Obono 41 years, Monica Oraca 5 years, Mercy Poul (Mr. Poul’s wife) 55 years, Chinelo Ifedegwu 9 years, and Lewis Duru 6 years.
The convictions followed a long legal process during which the defendants initially pleaded not guilty. However, after evidence and witness testimonies were presented, the court ruled that the suspects were complicit in the abductions and illegal transportation of children across state lines.
