Amnesty International charges Nigerian authorities with identifying and prosecuting the killers responsible for the unjust killing of renowned Islamic cleric Sheikh Mustapha Aliyu Unguwar Mai Kawo.
Sheikh Mustapha was abducted about three weeks ago in his hometown, the Kankara local government area of Katsina state, by the terrorist groups of armed bandits terrorising the northwestern part of the country.
Daily Episode gathered that the bandits had earlier contacted the diseased family, threatening to kill him while demanding ransom.
A few days after the murder threat, news of his beheading broke, as the bandits tragically slaughtered him, the cleric, setting uncertainty in the community and trapping citizens in the dark to mourn the loss of the icon.
However, Amnesty International condemned the act, urging the Nigerian government to put an end to killing innocent citizens and fish out all the perpetrators of the inhuman act.
According to the statement released by the organisation, “The Nigerian authorities must ensure that the suspected killers of Islamic scholar Sheikh Mustapha Aliyu of the Unguwar Mai Kawo Kankara local government area of Katsina state face justice.
“The elderly Islamic leader was held in deplorable custody of the gunmen that abducted him for almost three weeks before they slaughtered him.
“Gunmen and other armed groups continue to carry out daily atrocities across Katsina State, razing villages and raping women and girls with utter impunity.
“The killing of the leader of Munazzamatul Fityanul came days after the Chief Imam of Maru in Zamfara state was also killed while in custody of his abductors, who demanded an N20 million ransom.
“Incessant killings and the stunning failure of the authorities to end them and bring suspected perpetrators to justice have been and continue to be a threat to the right to life in Nigeria. The statement added.
