The operatives of Benue State Police Command arrested a police inspector and two other suspects who were reportedly caught stealing electric cables in Makurdi, Benue State Capital.
The suspects were said to be rescued from lynching by irate youths.
According to Zagalola Makama, the security analyst and counterinsurgency expert, on June 10 at about 8:00 am, officers of D’ Division Police Station received a distress report that three men had broken into a shop behind Alhaji Dash House, Ankpa Quarters, Makurdi, and stolen electric cables.
“Before the arrival of the police, members of the community had descended on the suspects with the intent to lynch them,” the statement said.
A police patrol team was swiftly mobilised to the scene and rescued the suspects identified as Mohammed Umaru, 49; Mohammad Mutala, 27; and Police Inspector Innocent Ishaku.
Inspector Ishaku, who reportedly sustained severe injuries from the mob attack, was immediately taken to the Police Clinic in Makurdi for treatment. He has since been discharged after being stabilised.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Inspector Ishaku was formerly attached to PMF 13 Makurdi but was demobilised to Kaduna State Command about six months ago.
“He has since been detained, defaulted, and is currently awaiting his orderly room trial,” said the sources.
