Despite recent victory claims shared by the Nigerian Defence Headquarters on the ground of tackling security challenges faced by the country, the Nigerian armed forces have lost growth in the annual Global Military Ranking of the 2024 Global Firepower (GFP).
In the 2024 ranking, the Nigerian Armed Forces dropped to 39th, a backlash to the African giant, which has experienced a significant decline in three years, looking at how the country’s armed forces were ranked 36th in 2023 and 35th in 2022.
However, Nigeria has recently acquired advanced fighter jets and other powerful military assets, as well as media briefings and publications by the country’s defence headquarters giving updates on fighting Boko Haram terrorists in the northeast region and armed bandits in the northwest and north-central while Biafran terrorists in the country’s southeastern part.
In the list, Nigeria dropped from third position to fourth in Africa, as Egypt maintained its first position of military power and the strongest, followed by Algeria as second and South Africa third.
Daily Episode gathered that categories considered in the ranking among the 145 countries reviewed, in which Nigeria ranked low, are tanker fleet strength, destroyer fleet strength, helicopter carrier fleet strength, naval corvette fleet strength, reserve military strength, and submarine fleet strength.
Also, it ranked poorly for cruise oil and natural gas consumption; however, the good news for Nigeria is how the country did excellently in total manpower available and population fit for service with its paramilitary strength.
Countries like the United States of America retained the top spot in sports for 18 consecutive years, while countries like Russia, China, India, and South Korea maintained the top five spots in the Global Military Ranking
