Following the resurgence of thuggery activities, where gangs from different communities destabilize peace with communal violence, killings, snatching of mobile phones and motorbikes, drug abuse, and gender-based violence, among several crimes committed by the groups, Aisha Haruna Kabuga, the Kano State coordinator of the National Council of Child Rights Advocates of Nigeria, urges the Kano State government to combat the menace.
Kabuga, who made the plea in an open letter addressed to the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, urged swift intervention, as the rise of thuggery activities threatens the safety, security, and well-being of citizens, which is undermining the state’s progress.
Recall that police authorities in the state have launched a crackdown on the thugs, where several arrests were made. Still, the rate at which several communities sink in daily by the groups is alarming, which demands urgent government attention.
According to her statement, “It’s primary for the government to implement policies that ordinary citizens can see and enjoy; therefore, I urge the governor to implement community-based initiatives to address root causes, such as poverty, unemployment, and social exclusion.
“We understand the importance of collaboration and community engagement as part of national development and proper policy sustainability, going by which I advise collaborating with stakeholders to promote youth empowerment, education, and job creation.
“Beyond the listed, strengthen law enforcement and security agencies to effectively tackle the thuggery engagement, which threatens the lives of citizens and peaceful coexistence in Kano.
“We believe that collective action can curb this menace. We urge your administration to prioritise this issue and work towards creating a safer, more secure Kano State,” she added
