A Shari’a Court sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, has sentenced one Yusuf Usman to six months in prison for stealing shoes belonging to worshippers at the Government College Mosque.
Usman, who pleaded guilty to charges of criminal trespass and theft, was convicted by Judge Malam Kabir Muhammad on Tuesday. The judge, however, gave him an option to pay a fine of ₦5,000 instead of serving the prison term.
In addition to the sentence, the court ordered Usman to pay ₦150,000 as compensation to the mosque committee. The judge warned that failure to pay the compensation would result in an additional one-year jail term.
Earlier, the prosecutor, ASP Luka Sadau, told the court that the defendant was apprehended by members of the mosque committee on June 13 and handed over to the police.
According to Sadau, “After the Jumaat prayer, the defendant stole shoes worth ₦100,000 belonging to worshippers. During the investigation, he confessed that he often visits the mosque during Friday prayers to steal shoes and resells them at Monday Market or Maraban Rido.
