Winners Emerged At UWA Zonal Essay, Writing Competition

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nigerian education sector has suffered setbacks, as the pandemic forced the closure of schools and academic activities across the country for a couple of months.

Academicians and students are the most affected victims of the pandemic, as academic performance has declined since the resumption of academic activities in the country.

To boost academic performance, especially the reading and writing culture among students, a non-governmental organisation, “Universal Writers and Authors,” outlines measures by building a mechanism to serve as an avenue to strengthen the culture of reading and writing among students.

The organisation usually organises essay-writing competitions in Kaduna, a state with the slogan “Center for Learning,” for secondary school students across the geo-political zone of the state, and so far many students and schools have benefited from the ongoing competition, now in its second season.

For the zonal competition, one of the judges, Musa Jama’are, noted that the Nigerian Tulip International College scored the highest mark to emerge in the 1st position, while Ansar-U-Deen College, Bakin Ruwa, and Zabib College have maintained the 2nd and 3rd positions to clinch the state roundup for the 2022/2023 essay writing and lexicon competitions.

However, during the final stage of the Zone-two competition, Abdulazeez Alhassan, the organisation’s president, told Daily Episode that the 2022/2023 essay writing and lexicon competitions, which commenced on the 13th of October 2022, had recorded more success in both school participation and student performance than the previous season.

According to him, letters of invitation were sent to about 300 schools across the three geo-political zones, and a significant number accepted and positively participated more than before; such a turnout is a recommended development compared to the previous seasons. he said

Most of the students, especially those participating for the second time, have shown a high level of improvement in fighting stage phobia and grammatical errors in their presentations, which proves to us that both the teachers and students have significantly improved

However, the Universal Writers and Authors have helped in strengthening Kaduna State students and schools in improving grammar, mechanical accuracy, sentence construction, paragraph development, and pronunciation, among others, through the annual essay writing competition.

Therefore, we call on the government, non-governmental organisations and every responsible citizen to support our initiative in growing the educational sector, so our children will enjoy a better future with quality education. He added
