Following the controversy and reactions from Nigerian clerics and social media users on the issue of inter-faith dialogue between religious groups in the country.
Kaduna-based prominent Islamic cleric, Sheik Dr. Ahmed Gumi, has cleared the views of many by revealing how the Quran encourages inter-faith dialogue.
The cleric stated this in an interview with Daily Episode on Sallah Day at his residence in Kaduna while quoting a verse in reference to the lingering issues in chapter 3:64, which stated that Say: “O People Of the Book! Come to common terms As between us and you: That we worship None but God; That we associate No partners with Him; That we erect not, From among ourselves, Lords and patrons Other than God.” If then they turn back, Say ye: “Bear witness That we (at least) Are Muslims (bowing To God’s Will).”
People should understand the difference between religion and love for one another. Most importantly, we should worship Allah righteously.
Gumi further charges the Muslim faithful with giving arms to the poor, as helping the less privileged is a paramount pillar of Islam, so the rich should do the necessary as well as the less privileged too.
While commenting on the issue of fasting during the month of Shawal, Gumi noted that once the Shawal moon is sighted, Ramadan’s chapter is closed and sealed on Eid-Day, the compulsory fasting is finished, therefore any other is considered supererogatory (Nafli).
However, fasting in the month of Shawal is not compulsory. It only depends on somebody’s ability and wishes, but without linking it to Ramadan or making it compulsory, as Allah did not disclose rewards for fasting.
So, the celebration of Eid-Fitir should teach us the good morals we learn during Ramadan. We should always distance ourselves from what Allah forbids, as we hope Allah has accepted everyone’s devotion, especially for those who have witnessed the Night of Decree (Laitul Qadr). He added
