Hon. Abdulmumini Jibrin has countered Governor Babagana Zulum’s recent concerns about the potential negative impact of the new tax reform bill on states’ revenue.
Jibrin, in a recent interview, has called on Zulum to be more transparent with the people of Borno State. He urged the governor to publicly disclose the state’s current revenue allocation and the projected figures after the implementation of the tax reform.
By doing so, Jibrin believes that the public can gain a clearer understanding of the situation and dispel any misconceptions about the state’s concerns.
The lawmaker also highlighted the existence of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), which allocates 3% of its funds to each of the six North-Eastern states.
He revealed that Borno State has recently received a significant sum of N19 billion from the NEDC.
Jibrin further pointed out that the Equalization Fund, designed to assist states with lower revenue generation, has been allocated a substantial sum of N350 billion.
He emphasized that Borno State is eligible to receive funds from this fund.
Governor Zulum had earlier expressed concerns about the potential impact of the tax reform on the state’s ability to pay salaries. He had called on Northern Governors and northerners to reject the bill.
Jibrin, however, urged Zulum to engage in dialogue and work collaboratively with other states to address the challenges posed by the new tax reform bill.
