Tragedy as Nigerian professor and lecturer at the Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto (UDUS), Prof. Abubakar Roko, has passed away after battling a critical illness while awaiting funds for life-saving surgery.
The late Professor Roko, a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Physical and Computing, had been diagnosed with a life-threatening condition that required urgent surgical intervention abroad. The cost of the procedure, estimated at ₦13 million, was to cover treatment at a medical facility in Egypt.
In a desperate bid to save his life, the university’s alumni association issued a public appeal for donations through social media platforms, urging kind-hearted individuals to contribute towards the medical fund. The fundraising effort, however, could not meet the target in time.
His death was confirmed in a statement posted on the official Facebook page of the UDUS Alumni Association.
“We are saddened to announce the demise of Professor Abubakar Roko,” the statement read. “He was, until his death, a lecturer with the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Physical and Computing. We want to use this opportunity to thank everyone for their financial support and prayers during this difficult time. May Allah (SWT) reward you abundantly and grant him eternal peace.”
The news has sparked widespread reaction on social media, with many Nigerians expressing outrage over the lack of institutional support for the professor.
Many Nigerians slam the government for not supporting the lecturer while he battles the life-threatening disease, and many call for action in the country’s health sector.
