Nigerian refugees in the Niger Republic will be returning to Borno in November.
Residents of Mallam Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area, Borno State, who fled to neighboring towns in the Niger Republic six years ago after insurgent attacks, will be allowed to return home in November.
Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum made the announcement during a clearance operation in Mallam Fatori, a liberated town.
The governor had spent two days in the neighboring Niger Republic’s Diffa and Bosso provinces, from which he led some Nigerian refugees on Thursday to Mallam-Fatori, the headquarters of Abadam LGA, which had been in the hands of the insurgents for six years.
Governor Zulum stated that the safe relocation of civilians to Mallam Fatori will ‘hopefully’ begin by the end of November 2021, after which authorities will consider returning people to Abadam town, which was also occupied by insurgents.
Mallam Fatori, on the outskirts of Lake Chad, was violently occupied by Boko Haram for approximately six years before the military took control. Residents have sought refuge in Diffa and Bosso, both of which are close to Mallam Fatori.
