President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered security agencies to shoot on sight anyone carrying Ak-47 and other sophisticated weapons to stem the tide of banditry and kidnapping in parts of northern Nigeria.
The Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu made this disclosure in a interview he granted to the BBC Hausa Service which was monitored by Daily Episode.
This order, he said, becomes imperative due to the rising cases of banditry and kidnappings in Zamfara and other parts of the north.
“The President has ordered the security forces to go into the bushes and shoot whoever they see with AK-47 and other sophisticated weapons. He ordered that whoever is seen with these terrible weapons should be shot immediately” Garba Shehu disclosed.
Zamfara and other parts of the north has been in the news recently owing to the kidnap of students in Kagara, Niger State and Jangebe Zamfara state. The students were later released after spending days in the kidnapper’s dens following intense negations by government for their release.
It will be recalled that Daily Episode report the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Muhammed came under intense criticism last month after saying that Fulani herdsmen have no option than to carry AK-47 guns in self defence since the government and security agencies has failed in protecting them and their livestock’s from cattle rustlers.
He later retracted the statement, saying he was quoted out of context.
