A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos today gave judgement in favour of a former President of the Senate, Abubakar Olusola Saraki in a case brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC which sought the permanent forfeiture of two of his properties to the Federal Government.
The Court, in giving its judgement, faulted the EFCC for failing to produce credible evidence to support its claims that the said properties were paid for with funds sourced from the Kwara State Government House.
The EFCC had arraigned Saraki for what it claimed as the diversion of #100m monthly from the coffers of Kwara State Government when he held sway as the Governor of the State. The EFCC claimed that the said houses, located in Plots 10 and 11 Abdulkadir Road, GRA, Illorin, Kwara State were purchased with parts of the diverted funds.
Reacting to the judgement, the former Senate President expressed his happiness at the outcome of the judgement and restated his belief in the judiciary.
Writing on his verified official Twitter handle, Saraki said ” I have always believed in the judiciary as the bastion that protects and upholds the rights and liberties of citizens in a democracy. And for this reason, I express my gratitude to the court for upholding the laws of our land”.
It is not clear yet if the EFCC will appeal the judgement.
