The opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Saturday called on Nigerians to hold the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari responsible for attacks on peaceful protesters who protested on June 12/Democracy Day across the country.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party described the attacks on unarmed and peaceful protesters as sacrilegious.
Daily Episode reports that Teargas canisters were fired at some Nigerians who converged in different parts of the country to protest against the Buhari-led government.
The party also stated that President Buhari displayed his disdain for free speech and other democratic tenets when he addressed Nigerians on Saturday morning, while failing to rein in the security agencies against clamping down on protesters.
“It is awkward that the APC and President Buhari, who were allowed their freedom when they protested in 2014, would turn around to subject Nigerians to actions of inhumanity including the use of firearms against the people, as being witnessed today,” the statement said.
It also revealed that it was cataloguing all the human rights infringements which the APC and President Buhari have subjected Nigerians to be forwarded to the international community.
Reports from across the country indicated that the government mobilised police and other security agents to clamp down on protesters in various parts of Nigeria where the protests took place.
However, in a show of solidarity with the protesters, the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde and Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shuaibu joined the protests in their respective states, to the delight of those present.
