Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police (IGP), has said 28 suspects are linked to Yelewata’s massive killings in Benue State.
Last week, gunmen invaded the Yelewata and Daudu communities in the Guma area of Benue and killed over 200 people, including farmers and internally displaced persons.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged security forces to ferret out the culprits during his visit to the state.
The president said he expected the police to have made some arrests after the attack in Yelewata.
In a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, the police IG announced that his teams are still after other suspects involved in the massacre.
He reassured Nigerians that the police force remains in control and is intensifying efforts to confiscate illegal light and small arms from unlawful holders.
Egbetokun said border patrols have been strengthened to stem the influx of irregular migrants into the country, enhancing national security.
The IGP said the arrested suspects, including 22 individuals detained in Jos, Plateau State, in connection with the killing of nine people travelling for a wedding in Quanpan, would soon be arraigned in court.
