Lagos, Southwestern Nigeria—As the battle to curtail drug abuse in the country intensifies, the Nigerian Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the arrest of drug queen Alhaja Aishat Feyisara Ajoke Elediye and a filmmaker and motivational speaker, Emeka Emmanuel Mbadiwe, in Lagos.
Mbadiwe, who was a trained filmmaker in the United States of America, was arrested in a hotel in Leki on Sunday, 27 December 2024, after an earlier arrest and detention of his drugs partner, Uzoekwe Ugochukwu James, at a location believed to be a warehouse in the Ikeja area of Lagos State, according to a statement released by NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi on Sunday, January 5th.
The statement revealed that Mbadiwe’s drug business partner, James, was arrested while trying to retrieve about 22 parcels of laud, a potent cannabis strain weighing about 17.30 kg, after a successful shipment in a wooden box at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport from the US.
However, besides the duo, “Iya Ruka,” the notorious 61-year-old drug queen with the real name Alhaja Aishat Feyisara Ajoke Elediye, who has been on the run, was arrested at her Okota residence after an intelligence gathering.
Iya Ruka, whose investigation revealed she led a major drug cartel in Mushin, had been disguising herself with a fabric import business as a cover until her arrest and interception with a truck loaded with about 1,540 kg of cannabis.
Femi Babafemi’s statement further details the NDLEA’s recovery of 42 drug-laced cupcakes from 20- and 29-year-old Ayomide Morakinyo and Khadijat Abdulraheem in Ilorin, Kwara State. These individuals were responsible for producing and distributing the locally made cupcakes, which were intended to intoxicate addicts.
Meanwhile, an ex-convict, Sodade Sunday Eniola, who has in the past paid a fine to avoid prison, was found guilty by a court for a drug trafficking offence and was also re-arrested for an international passport scheme. Eniola was arrested for about 52 passports concealed in shipments bound for Canada and Russia.
