In a bid to improve the lives of citizens, the federal government of Nigeria allocated approximately 850 million naira in the 2024 budget for the dualisation of the 15km Port Harcourt to Onne Junction Road (Section IIIA) in Rivers State, south-south Nigeria.
The project aims to alleviate the suffering of citizens and improve infrastructural development and the standard of living, as the deplorable conditions of the road pose a danger that threatens citizens’ lives.
However, the project was awarded to contractors who had been mobilised to the site, and within a short period of time, the intervention went smoothly as the project was completed within the estimated period.
Daily Episode gathered from Tracka, a budget transparency initiative by BudgIT: the road was graded and asphalted from Onne Junction to the trailer park junction in September 2024, but parts of it are already breaking down, with visible potholes and cracks forming on the surface.
Tracka, which monitored the project, called on the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing (FMWNG) — the implementing agency — to disclose full project details to the public and compel the contractor to return to the site and fix the substandard work.
