On Sat 7th December, the African Institute of Waste Management and Environmental Studies (AIWMES) holds its annual induction, training, and investiture in Kano, Northwestern Nigeria.
The event graced the attendance of players in the environmental sector, ranging from both policymakers to advocacy groups and the environmental reporters.
However, annually, the institute recognizes key players making significant impacts on climate justice and environmental issues.
For 2024, among over 1000 nominees, Kankara’s groundbreaking and impactful stories paved the way for his emergence as the environmental journalist of the year, AIWMES president Dr. Suleyman M Tako revealed.
According to Tanko, “For over four years, we have been noticing the good work of Kankara, which holds both the citizens and authorities accountable in Nigeria and beyond.
“Hence, we need dedicated journalists like him. Such remarkable work deserves recognition, and those behind it should be celebrated and motivated to inspire others. This way, we can collectively address and find lasting solutions to environmental challenges in Africa.
However, following Abubakar Ismail Kankara’s reportage impact, which proffers solutions to indiscriminate dumping of refuse, indiscriminate spitting, and how negligence to environmental issues roots decline in agricultural products across the country are worth celebrating.” Tanko Added
While giving a remark, Kankara, Daily Episode editor, thanked the almighty God for the success as he charged journalists to dwell into climate and environmental stories that can inform a larger society on the benefits of waste to cash or how some harmful practices cause affect the environment in the country.
According to him, “I can recall how I’ve been traveling to a local area where I understand mostly the villagers, who are farmers and fishers, are not informed about the harmful practice, making them lose in the venture.
Beyond financial gain, some of the issues our environment is battling which are also a major threat to our lives as humans, so therefore, we must understand we are part of the solutions that the average person listens to every day, either on the radio, television, or in print, or basically online, which has taken over”.
