Following the increase in price of fertiliser and other agricultural products in the country, which is rooted in a financial trial in the agribusiness across the country, the Jigawa State citizens urge the state governor, Malam Umar Namadi, to support local farmers with subsidised fertiliser.
In an interview with a farmer and herdsman, Malam Abubakar Muhammad, a resident of Zangon Goge village of the Kiyawa Local Government area, revealed that farmers in low-income communities in Jigawa are frustrated.
To their plight, Mr. Muhammed questions the government’s commitment to addressing issues bedevilling rural communities, urging the state to support the underprivileged farmers as dividends of democracy, for which the governor campaigns to reshape the agricultural sector before his emergence.
According to him, “My major challenge is fertiliser, and it’s so unfortunate the government doesn’t support us with a subsidised one. As citizens in the rural community, all we demand is fertiliser, access to clean water, and education for our children.
“The government doesn’t even consider the less privileged, because we are not literate, as vulnerable; we are only remembered during elections and forgotten afterwards.
“Even though we vote for the government with hopes they will alleviate our sufferings, they mostly only support the privileged.
“The hardship in the country is a major threat to peaceful living, especially since many can’t afford a single square meal a day.
“However, if the government addresses the current economic challenge, where food will no longer be a challenge for the average citizen, most problems we are currently facing will be solved.
“Beyond food security and hardship, I will urge Nigerians to stop generalising or labelling every Fulani as a terrorist, but rather accuse the criminals of their crimes.
“It’s so pathetic to be in a mix of people where they will tag everyone as a criminal, and we can’t do anything about it. Mr. Muhammad added
