Niger, Northcentral, Nigeria – Following the heavy downpour on Wednesday, floods rocked the Angwa Hausawa community of Mokwa Area Council in Niger State, which recorded casualties while sweeping away many children.
According to Mohammed, a community source who spoke to Daily Episode, the ravaging flood also destroyed properties worth millions of naira, including business buildings.
“Around Goodwill, the flood covered all the main roads along the Lagos-to-Kaduna highway. In my presence, five children were recovered from the flood,” he told Daily Episode. “About four little children died from the flood after they were rescued.”
Although efforts were made by community members who voluntarily swung into action to search for the children drowned in the flood, many people are still missing.
Like Muhammed, another person, Tanko Mohammed, revealed to our reporter that more people have been declared missing since the incident. Among the missing is his schoolteacher.
“The school teacher, simply identified as Mr Abdulmumeen, who teaches at Hakimi Aliyu, including eight children from one household, was among the identified missing people,” he said, adding that their house is located in the Unguwar Hausawa area of Mokwa.
“3 males and 2 females were recovered dead before I left the scene. A truck and a car, including an overhead tank under the Mafuta area, were also destroyed by the flash flood,” he said.

When our correspondent visited the scene, the flash flood had receded during this reporter’s visit. But it was observed that the flood had caused gridlock, and travellers were stranded.
Hussaini Ibrahim, the spokesperson of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), was not available for comment. Messages and WhatsApp messages sent to him remained unattended.
