Local security operatives of vigilante groups numbering over 6 who were chasing some suspected criminals violently ‘rained bullets’ on teenage schoolboy Musa Sama’Ila Yakila, sent on an errand to buy onions for domestic uses in Kagara town of Rafi area of Niger State.
The 12-year-old student who was schooled at Abubakar Imam Secondary School in Kagara was heading back home from Sabon Gari market before bullets tragically ended his life on June 3, 2025.
His bereaved father, Abdullahi Jibrin, stood haplessly watching how his deceased son was brought home dead. His voice irked with emotion, narrating how his son’s life was tragically ruined with triggers from vigilantes, local security.
“The Vigilantes were chasing someone whom they allege is a criminal. But the suspect ran away. “While they chased to arrest him, unfortunately, they fired a bullet which victimised my son, who was hit in his stomach and died on the spot,” Jibrin told Daily Episode.

Jibrin lamented that no one had taken responsibility for the action that led to the untimely death of his son, explaining that his deceased son was sent to buy onions from the market for domestic use.
“He was sent on an errand to buy onions from Sabon Gari market in Kagara. We were preparing to leave for Yakila town days before he was shot for the Sallah festival; the onions were still in his hand when he was shot.”
“After Maghrib prayer, I was in my shop sitting, but didn’t return home. I received a call from one of my friends that I should return home, saying my son was shot with a gun.”

The frustrated father walked for a minute, leaving his shop unclosed, before taking a bike to meet his friend, who broke the news of the unexpected death of his son to him, Musa, the teenage schoolboy.
“They brought out the dead body, and we left,” he recalled how he went to the hospital. “We went to the monarch’s house, then to the police station to report the incident, and we were told to take the dead body to bury.”
The Divisional Police officer in Kagara had delegated his Divisional Crime officer to condole with the bereaved family, but others folded their arms, watching without condoling and seeking justice for the teenage schoolboy Musa, Jibril laments.
“None has condoled with me except the DCO that was sent by the DPO. I was told to take it as the will of God. I seek justice for my son, as those that shot him are still walking freely,” bereaved Jibrin told Daily Episode.
He further stated he has not seen any legal action taken against the culprits, adding that the vigilantes arrived with three motorcycles at the scene of the incident. The bullets were said to have penetrated Musa’s stomach while heading back home from Sabon Gari market under Kagara, which led to his death.
12-Year-Old Sama’ila: Dream Cut Short As He Hopes To Become a Lecturer
Musa’s father, clutched in his traditional regalia, wept uncontrollably. He raised his head with bitter anguish that his son had dreamt of becoming a university lecturer to educate many in Nigeria. Before life fled out of his body, the deceased student had already prepared to take his Junior West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) exams.
Recounting their daily night conversations, Jibril stated, “Whenever he talks about his career dream, he often talks about becoming a university lecturer. He was a brilliant student who was just in JSS 3 before his life was tragically cut short.
“On several occasions, he was given a lot of books by his school teachers for always answering questions perfectly. ‘Whatever he was taught in school, he would tell me.'”
His son’s demise had opened a chaotic chapter in his life, retiring to bed always without having anyone to dialogue with. “Even when questions were thrown at class, he would raise his hand and answer the question confidently,” Jibrin said, recalling how they spoke before sleeping.
