Despite the growing number of out-of-school children and decay in Nigeria’s education sector, school structures meant to serve pupils and encourage enrolment are now counted among abandoned or unexecuted projects.
In the northwest, a region with nearly 69% of Nigeria’s out-of-school children, the federal government has budgeted the sum of N400m for the construction of a government girls’ science academy in the Kasarawa community of the Wamako local government area of Sokoto State in the 2024 budget to curtail the syndrome.
Eight months after the budget, contractors have yet to mobilise the site for the construction of the N400m Government Girls Science Academy despite its urgent need in the community, where education is threatened by poverty and insecurity.
As published by Tracka, a public accountability and transparency organisation that exposes the Kasarawa unexecuted school project, members of the community have waited for a long time, hoping the project will allow them to have more public schools.
“Schools in our community are far below the demand, considering the population and number of children. We desperately need more schools so our children will have a better future,” community members plead in an interview with a field reporter.
However, in its call for action, Tracka urges the project implementing agency, the federal ministry of education, to disclose details of the school project and ensure its speedy execution so more children will be enrolled and the number of out-of-school children in the country will be reduced.
