Following a growing erosion and landslide at Kaduna government college, which resulted in damaging culverts and increased the stormwater runoff, the Nigerian government, through the federal ministry of education, awarded a contract of about 19.3 million for the construction of drainage at the college.
The project, which was awarded to curtail flash floods from the Wall Fence to the River Bank at the college and captured in the 2024 FG Budget, has now regrettably been counted among the increasing number of abandoned projects in Nigeria.
In a report published by Tracka, a transparency organisation, and field monitored by Daily Episode, the contractors have abandoned the erosion control and culvert construction despite its significance at the college and the neighbouring communities.
The contractor abandoned the project in early February after completing half of the project, which experts warn may result in heavy downpours damaging the constructed parts.
However, Tracka, in its statement, charged the federal Ministry of Education, which served as the implementing agency, with publishing details of the project and ensuring contractors are returned to the construction site.
Thus, ensuring proper implementation of projects strengthens democracy and restores hope to citizens.
