In a historic direction aimed at the domestication of the Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) policy in Kano, the WEE Catalyst Fund, the Isa Wali Empowerment Initiative (IWEI), Fable Advisory, and others partnered in holding a poetry competition in Kano to mark the 2025 Children’s Day.
The event, which was part of IWEI’s 2025 Children’s Day celebrations held at the Centre for Arabic Studies, gathered dignitaries and changemakers from diverse industries. Schoolchildren were highlighted on the importance of women’s economic empowerment, as well as a poetry competition among secondary school students, where winners emerged
In an interview, Isa Wali’s executive director, Amina Hanga, highlights why the Kano State Government should domesticate the women’s empowerment policy (We Catalyst Fund) in the state.
According to Hanga, “As we celebrate Children’s Day, we gather to showcase how the creative industry can reshape the future of our children, especially the girl child; hence, we collaborate with other organisations and critical stakeholders to bring this poetry event.

We are using this opportunity to raise awareness about the women’s economic empowerment policy, which we are working together with the state government towards the domestication of at the state level.
We are aware that a policy like this is critical for women’s economic empowerment. She said
As citizens, we all know the impact of empowering a woman, because when women are economically empowered, their families’ benefits, nutrition, and education of their children will be improved while they will unanimously contribute to the growth and development of their community, which will also contribute to achieving the sustainable development goals which Nigeria has signed as well.
That’s why today we decided to use poetry and the children, because what the poets displayed at this poetry competition is a testimony that they will utilise the opportunity to reach a global stage like the likes of Ilhan, who also started from this level.” She added
