The Nigerian Army on Saturday, denied widespread reports that a Chinese defence firm supplied the army with inferior armoured vehicles.
The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig Gen Mohammed Yerima debunked the reports in a statement and described it as false and “a figment of the author’s imagination”.
The report by an online blog had claimed that the VT-4 main battle tanks, ST1 Light tanks and the SH-5 Self Propelled howitzers, which was supplied by the China Ordnance Industries Group Corporation Ltd, NORINCO, in a $152million deal, has been plagued by constant mechanical and technical problems, thereby hampering the efforts of troops in the fight against Boko Haram and other insurgents in the northeast.
Brig Gen Yerima, therefore demanded for the immediate retraction of the of the story, urging media practitioners to uphold journalistic ethics and imbibe professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
