Barely 24 hours after a newborn baby, Salisu Sale, was born with gastroschisis, an abnormality where children are born with the intestines outside the body, he is yet to undergo an emergency surgery following nurses’ strikes at public hospitals nationwide.
The baby Salisu, born in the Dakido Community of the Malam Madori Local Government Area of Jigawa State, was first rushed to Hadeja General Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday, July 29, but could not be attended to for lack of facilities and equipment. Malm Sale, the child’s father, told Daily Episode.

According to Sale, “We were referred to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in Kano, which we rushed to, but unfortunately, doctors were on strike; my child could not be attended to.
“Subsequently, we were advised to call an NGO, the USN Cares Foundation, which may support us, as we don’t have the means to afford the surgery at a private hospital.
“But we hope that Allah will intervene so my child will survive,” he added.
However, the funder of the USN Cares Foundation, Ummusalma Nasir, who shared the news of the baby’s condition, pleaded for public support as the child was rushed to a private hospital called Soft Care in Kano.
“Currently, the child is yet to undergo surgery, but we have to make payment, so we are calling on the public to support with donations so we can rescue the child.”
