Two persons have reportedly lost their lives in a fatal accident involving a truck and a commercial tricycle along Dalori Road in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred on Monday morning when the speeding truck lost control and rammed into the tricycle, killing the occupants instantly.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were said to have arrived at the scene promptly to evacuate the victims and clear the road for traffic flow.
Residents expressed concern over the rising cases of accidents involving heavy-duty vehicles within the Maiduguri metropolis, describing the trend as alarming and preventable.
They lamented the continued movement of articulated trucks within residential and high-traffic areas despite repeated complaints to authorities.
“This is becoming a daily tragedy in Maiduguri. We keep losing innocent lives because there is no strict enforcement to regulate these reckless drivers,” a resident, who simply identified himself as Musa, said.
The residents called on the Borno State Government and relevant traffic enforcement agencies to take urgent measures to restrict heavy vehicles from plying inner-city roads during peak hours.
As at the time of filing this report, the bodies of the deceased had been deposited in the hospital morgue, while the truck driver was said to have fled the scene.
