The Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, AKTH, has successfully conducted the first cochlear implant surgery in the North.
A news bulletin posted by the hospital on Monday revealed that the surgery was conducted in May on a three-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl.
Speaking during a follow-up visit by the patients on Monday, Prof. Kolo Emmanuel, a Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist, who is the representative of the team leader of the operation, expressed delight at the restoration of the children’s hearing impairment.

Earlier, a consultant from King Abdallah Hospital in Jordan, Al-Zoubi Firas, who led the surgery, explained that a cochlear implant is an electronic device that transmits sound signals to people with severe hearing loss.
Mr. Firas further explained that the implant consists of an external portion that sits behind the ear and a second portion that is surgically placed under the skin.
In his remarks, the chief medical director of the hospital, Abdurrahman Sheshe, expressed optimism that the success recorded would open up doors for other patients to be treated.
