As the struggle to implement the Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Policy continues, the Isa Wali Empowerment Initiative (IWEI), in partnership with the Fable Advisory, organises an awareness programme in its pursuits to engage authorities and citizens in Kano.
The programme, which highlights the key provisions of the women’s economic empowerment (WEE) policy using a short film as an awareness campaign, further informs the citizens to make informed decisions.
However, in an interview, the IWEI’s programme manager, Ismail Isma’il Abdullahi, discloses that the IWEI and Fable Advisory are closely working with the Kano State government through its Ministry of Women, Children and the Disabled to ensure the domestication of the WEE policy in the state.
According to him, ‘The policy is currently in the process of domestication, and at IWEI and our partners, one of the key aspects we see necessary is creating awareness for all classes of citizens regarding the policy.
“In doing that, we developed a movie titled “Turba”, meaning “the path”, which the film actually showcases why women’s economic empowerment is crucial and important and why everybody needs to support the policy.
“Because it’s important every citizen understands the policy and supports the drive to achieve the set goals regarding women’s economics and the policy in general.
When asked about the measures the IWEI intends to deploy to ensure more women benefit from the Kano State government’s 50,000 business support, after participants at the film showcase count no single beneficiary, Mr Ismail discloses that IWEI will partner with the state government to ensure more women are enrolled.
According to him, we understand the Kano government’s commitment to investing in women; this is timely and should be applauded.
Considering our relationship with the ministry and the data of women we have, we will try to actualise a positive discussion which we hope will be a solution for the women and the state government.
However, we are aware that sometimes the ministry engages with registered bodies, and we will also encourage women to register their businesses and groups so as to be beneficiaries of the state support. Mr Ismai’l added.
