Salisu Sale, a baby born with gastroschisis, an abnormality where children are born with the intestines outside the body, dies 48 hours after birth while awaiting gastroschisis repair in a private hospital in Kano after a nurses’ strike hinders surgery at a public hospital.
It will be recalled that Daily Episode reported yesterday that the family appealed for public donations, as they couldn’t afford a private hospital.
The child, who was born at a Dakido community of the Malam Madori Local Government Area of Jigawa State, was earlier rushed to Hadeja General Hospital, which referred them to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for the gastroschisis repair. Unfortunately, the nurses’ strike prevented the child from not being attended to.
A nongovernmental organisation, USN Cares Foundation, which supported the child’s transfer to a private hospital, announces the child’s death in the early hours of Thursday, July 31.
According to USN’s funder, the child couldn’t survive due to a delay in surgery, although doctors made significant efforts at the best-choice hospital where he was later rushed, but he gave up this morning.
To this, Daily Episode announced that no one should make donations in the child’s name, as he’s no more.
However, the child’s death is one among the thousands who may die or suffer from unattended sickness across the country following the nurses’ 7-day warning strike.
Like Salisu, several children and citizens need and deserve proper medical attention as a fundamental right.
