From the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announcements, Nigerians have decided in the just concluded 2023 general elections held across the country. The elections favoured the ruling party in the presidential race, while gubernatorial, national, and state assembly elections gave both the ruling party, the All Progressive Congress (APC), and the opposition, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labor Party, the New Nigerians Peoples Party (NNPP), and several others, the chance to clinch the country’s ruling.
So far, campaigns and elections are over as the aggrieved head to the tribunal and the elected head transitions to governance, so the electorate will begin scoring their performance once they assume or swear into the office from across every sector, and campaigns promise greater accountability and developments in the country, which the citizens expect to always enjoy the dividends of democracy.
In Kaduna, citizens have begun calling on the newly elected governor, Sen. Uba Sani, who received a certificate of return on March 31, to run an inclusive government for fairness and justice.
However, Kaduna residents who spoke in separate interviews with our correspondents advised the governor-elect to build a mechanism that will ensure a conducive atmosphere for business and investors while eradicating poverty and unemployment by empowering youth and women with skills that will be supporting their start-up businesses.
Abubakar Sani, a resident of the Hayin Rigasa community in the Igabi local government area of Kaduna, urged the governor-elect to prove to the people that the mandate given to him was one he deserved.
“Let him strive to ensure that the dividends of democracy are given to the people.”
According to him, “Uba Sani should put a stop to the issue of market demolition and shop revocations, which led to the crumbling of businesses in markets across the state. The citizens deserve a solution to the situation, and it is important to bring succour to these people.
“Because so many have lost their means of livelihood, which has led to increased poverty and crime rates,” he said.
Though he commended the outgoing administration for improving the education sector in the state, he urged the governor-elect to build on that when he assumes power.
Similarly, Mr. John Ayuba, a resident of Barnawa, said the governor-elect should ensure he keeps to his campaign promises and concentrate on human and social development.
“There is hunger in the land, and the economic situation is hard; Uba Sani should prioritize the empowerment of the people.”
“Our textiles have been redundant for a long time; I advised that they should be revived so that our youth can be busy in the industry rather than sitting idle,” he said.
Like Abubakar and John, Hajiya Indo Alhassan, a resident of Tudun Wada Community in Kaduna South Local Government Area, also urged the governor-elect to reduce the tuition fee of the Kaduna State University (KASU) so the rate of dropout can be curtailed and the tuition fee can be affordable for both advantaged and disadvantaged children.
She prayed that God would grant the elected governor the wisdom to serve the people well and guide him in choosing the right people to support his administration.
