A building collapse on Gerrard Road in Ikoyi, Lagos State, claimed the lives of the victims.
Nine individuals have been rescued, according to the Lagos State Government. Three of the nine victims who were rescued have been released from the hospital, while the remaining six have been admitted.
The Lagos State Government’s Position
Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the Lagos State Deputy Governor, assured that the Lagos State Government would take full responsibility for the treatment and medical expenditures of the rescued victims. He revealed this during a visit to some of the incident’s rescued victims who are being treated at Lagos’ General Hospital.
Nine people of the Ikoyi building collapse, all males, have been rescued from the building’s debris, according to Hamzat, who added that three of the recovered victims were treated and discharged on the spot, while the remaining six are still undergoing treatment at the Medical Emergency Unit of the General Hospital in Lagos.
While noting that the admitted patients are responding well to treatment and are doing well, the Deputy Governor pointed out that the injuries they have incurred are minor.
He did say, however, that some of the victims of the collapsed building who were taken to the hospital dead were deposited at the mortuary.
“So we have six people in here, all men, and they are doing great,” he explained. The physicians have informed us of their condition; they have minor injuries that are not life-threatening. They are receiving treatment, and as you are aware, the Lagos State Government is fully responsible for their care.
We have their identities and will contact their relatives as soon as possible. Nine persons were saved, six of whom are nowhere, three of whom have gone back home, and as you are aware, we have ten bodies to remove from the scene.”
Hamzat expressed concern for the victims and promised them that they will get proper care during their recovery.
Similarly, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, who joined the Deputy Governor on the visitation, assured the rescued victims of quality and optimal health care service at the facility, underlining that competent medical experts are on the ground to aid in their rehabilitation.
