The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) moves to regulate social media platforms and online broadcasting service providers operating in the country. to apply for broadcast licence
The Commission Director general, Armstrong Idachaba, gave the directive in a newspaper on Thursday.
This is coming days after the federal government’s suspend the microblogging and social networking service operationsTwitter in the country.
The government says Twitter and other social media platforms must register as a Nigerian company for them “to do business in Nigeria.”
The advertorial reads:
“The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) hereby directs every Online Broadcast Service provider and Social Media Platforms operating within the Nigerian State to apply and obtain a broadcast license for their service(s).
“Note that any Online Broadcast Service Provider that fails to obtain a license will be considered an illegal entity.”
It is not immediately clear whether the directive applies strictly to only broadcast organizations or not.
Franca Aiyetan, the NBC spokesman, declined to speak on the matter when contacted by TheCable on Thursday.
