As part of its efforts to enhance accountability and improve the productivity of journalists across Africa, the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), through its social accountability project, UDEME, has commenced the 2024 UDEME Accountability Fellowship program with selected journalists.
The selected journalists, numbering 25, represent reputable media organisations from both broadcast, print, and online platforms across Nigeria and Ghana.
However, during the onboarding and training sessions held on March 19 and 20, 2024, via Zoom for the selected journalists, UDEME project manager Ijeoma Okereke-Adagba encouraged the selected journalists to exert their best efforts in producing unbiased and in-depth ground-breaking investigative stories with the goal of bringing change to a larger society.
The journalists were chosen after undergoing a rigorous selection process, ensuring that only the most qualified candidates are selected for the 2024 Accountability Fellowship. This sets high expectations for excellence during the six-month program, which also marks the inaugural fellowship under CJID’s UDEME project for the first fellows. She disclosed.
However, Daily Episode’s Abubakar Ismail Kankara is among the selected journalists as the fellows express readiness. The Fellowship seeks to build the capacity of journalists in West Africa to identify red flags in budget line items and unique patterns and trends in contract awards at the sub-national level, thereby setting the agenda for a transparent budget process.
The journalists were also trained on how to use relevant journalism tools for investigative reporting, including dos and don’ts, understanding budget formulation and preparation processes, and data for social accountability.
The 2024 Accountability Fellowship is also the first fellowship programme under the CJID’s UDEME project.
